How a PLC Works

A PLC can control and automate many actions involving interlocks, motors, relays, contactors, sensors, VFDs, and more by reading various control signals (digital or analog) into the PLC and performing programmed actions based on the states of any inputs.

For complex jobs, using a PLC can save time and significantly decrease the complexity of the panel, as the PLC can perform automated tasks with far less wiring and panel hardware than traditional relay logic controls. PLCs have the added benefit of eliminating sources of human error so you can have a safe, reliable system. Features like data logging and human-machine interfaces (HMI) are also possible.

Real-Life Application: Dam Intake Gantry Crane

Recently, PE had the opportunity to customize a PLC control panel for a gantry crane for one of our partners. We designed PLC control panels for 11 motions using PE Ultra Series drives, PE remote keypad kits, and PE Smart-Set. The PLC provided independent, tandem, and trash rake control of the respective hoists. While also coordinating the safe operation of all other crane functions, including weight and hook elevation indication. We also installed HMI in separate cabs, the control house, and outside on the gantry leg for data logging and status annunciation for ease of operation and troubleshooting.

Along with that, customized PLC programming was implemented, including:

  • Interlocks for main & auxiliary trolley to prevent motion if proper motions aren't stowed
  • Gantry motion interlocks with storm brake controls
  • Stowage position indicators for all hoists & trolleys
  • Anemometer set to trigger an alarm, allowing operators to safely stow crane if wind speed measurement is too high
  • Various motion alarms and indicators
  • Connected to 4 HMI touch screens for live crane motion feedback, load monitoring, and data & event logging

Because of the PLC installation, our partner's facility runs smoothly and more efficiently with substantially less chance of human error or mechanical/electrical stress on the crane system.
